The provision of renal patient education in the U.K. is currently diverse. Educational methods and techniques are developed and used locally, and there are no nationally recognised educational programmes available, in particular for pre-dialysis education. The publication of CKD guidelines by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (2008), Peritoneal Dialysis Guidelines (2011), and the CKD Quality Standards (2011), in addition to the Renal NSF (2004), has established the importance of a nationally recognised and validated education programme for patients.
